The air was hot. Above, a clear blue sky was spotted with the puffiest, purest white clouds. Below, crystal clear water, sparkling with translucent streaks of violet and pink and gold, swirled around bare calves. The water was warm. To each side, elegant, stone buildings rose up like pillars to heaven, reflecting the white light of the sun overhead. The air was thick with the taste of ocean salt. Far in the distance, waves crashed and someone was playing lively music. Everything was beautiful. Everything was warm. Perfect.

Except, that warmth was fading fast.

Brown eyes lazily opened to a shady forest. Past the gasp in the leaves, the sky was already painted red and purple with sunset. Cool air was rolling in as nighttime slowly overtook the warm sunlight. As he sat up, the young man became suddenly and painfully aware of himself. His head throbbed. His stomach turned and twisted in protest. His ears were ringing. His vision was unclear, the trees swimming around him. He shut his eyes tightly, groaning to himself. Slowly, he opened them again, and while everything he still felt uneasy, at least the forest wasn’t moving.

What had happened? Where was he?

With great caution not to aggravate his aching head, he looked about himself, taking in the forest that surrounded his apparent resting spot. Then, he looked at the ground. Nothing too noteworthy struck him, aside from a deal of blood on the rock his head had been lying by. He reached up to gingerly feel the side of his head, only to find no trace of a wound. It was definitely sore, though. As was his entire body, down to his feet. The more he attempted to move, the more apparent the discomfort became. Every muscle was stiff, and he began to wonder,

“Just how long was I asleep?”
